Peren district came into existence as a result of the bifurcation of Kohima District. It became the eleventh and the newest district of Nagaland. The district shares common boundaries with Assam state and Dimapur District in the west and north-western part respectively, Kohima District in the east and Manipur state in the south. The administrative seat is situated at Peren town. Tening town is the other important town located in the district. Most of the inhabitants of this district are Zeliang and Kuki tribes.
