Political Overview of Nagaland

Nagaland got the status of a separate state in the Indian Union on 1st December 1963. The first level of democratic elections was held in the state in 1964.

The Nagaland legislative assembly has 60 members who are elected by means of a popular vote conducted by the election commission of India.

Since its formation, there have been nine times assembly elections in the state. The present government is running by Shri Neiphiu Rio of Naga Peoples Front (NPF).
